Programming
Kathryn McCarroll specifically chose to have the show during July and August because the topic lent itself to summer programming. Kathryn structured a series of informal Meet the Artists sessions, made possible by the Saint John Community Arts Funding Programme, which proved to be a great success as artists talked about their work and entered a dialogue with the viewers.
Olivia McNair, a working student from Mount Allison University, led small groups of children through a book-making project of their own each Saturday, with the Beyond Words exhibit as a catalyst. Kathryn stressed the importance of dialogue in the programming as this concept is central to the traditional sense of ‘book’. Although in this case the books are works of art, the dialogue between ‘author’, ‘text’ and ‘reader’ was encouraged in a way that intensified the ‘reading’ experience.
