The
book project
Beyond
Words, a thematic collaboration
between many of New Brunswick’s
top artists, is an extraordinary
exhibit. Originally, it
was referred to as ‘the
book project’ as they explored
the meaning of ‘book’ from
both individual and cultural
perspectives. Books
are physical objects we hold, feel
and manipulate. Yet they are also
cerebral, transmitting both knowledge
and concepts.
Books
operate on a personal and public
level: the
author reveals personal insights,
which the book exposes to the
public. From
the reader, books elicit a
variety of complex responses,
ranging from unsettling fear
to intense
pleasure. Moreover, enduring
books, like David Adams Richards’
novels,
are simultaneously regional
and universal.
There
are deep Maritime roots to be found
in the wood chosen by Darren Byers.
Sue Hooper’s installation is grounded
in the spirituality of the New
Brunswick landscape, while the
fabric ‘books’ by Andrea Meeson
and Alison Murphy respond to the
changing environment and economics
of the region. But the theme stretches
further. Linda Brine comments on
the Twin Towers; John Murphy reflects
on the Disappeared in Colombia;
Kathy Hooper’s work echoes her
time in Mexico; George Fry’s Dancing
is multi-cultural, as are Brian
Meeson’s environmental reflections.
All of the works comment on our
enduring relationship with the
printed word and its ramifications.
This
exhibit, which is traveling to
key locations in the Maritimes,
is a profound exploration of what
books mean to us, their role within
our culture, our conscious and
subconscious selves
